Review of Monnaie for the 9210

I have been testing on the Emulator Monnaie for version 6.00 Epoc Crystal from Kylom Software. This is one of the first third party programs I have used, and it is very impressive. Monnaie is a well know currency converter for ER5 and it has made the leap to ER6 with several improvements along the way. You can read my summary and observation of the program below:

Monnaie is shareware, and for those of you who don't know this means you can try before you buy, I would encourage anyone who regularly uses this program to register it so that you can provide support to the author and encourage the release of new programs. One of the most powerful things about EPOC is its extensibility through 3rd party programs, something which makes the platform better each time a new program is produced. Monnaie is a good example of this for those who do a lot of currency conversion you wont find a program better than this. Some of the features include:

  • Handles multiple different currencies, presented in pages of of 27 or 12. Ability to add currencies.
  • Any amount is instantly converted into all the currencies.
  • Screens can be customized (view by country or by region).
  • Exchange rates can be automatically updated either directly from Internet, or by import from a text file (different formats are available). 4 different formats are available for the input, import and display of exchange rates. Copy and paste compatible.

When you start Monnaie you are greeted by this screen, for shareware this is known as a nag screen and will disappear once you have registered. Monnaie has a low level of nagging compared to some programs!

You can start using the program straight away - all you need to do is type the number you want to convert (see highlighted red box) and then press the appropriate letter according to which country's currency you have entered. In this case I pressed 'F' for Britain.

The result is instantaneous conversion into all the different countries. By default the program includes 46, but as we shall see these can easily be added to!

The menus give access to all features of the program and when you are in them the toolbar pops up allowing you to use the command buttons of the 9210 to select an item from the menu or to cancel the menu. Here we can see the Exchange rates menu allowing you to close the program, choose the format of the conversion rates (see below) or allowing updating of conversion rates by various means.

As an example the format menu takes you to a dialog allowing you to control what currency the exchange rates are displayed in. You can also choose your home currency from a subsequent dialog box (see below).

Here we can see an import file being loaded and then checked.

The edit menu allows the copying and pasting of values from other programs.

For example if you have one value you could paste it in, press the letter which represented the currency, then press the letter of the country you want the value for, choose Ctrl+C and you could paste the value of the converted currency back to your original source. This is a much quicker process than it sounds.

The view menu allows you to control what is controlled in the main screen, and the screenshots below give you an example of some of these.

This shot shows the zoom function so that only 12 currencies are displayed on the screen at one time. This shot also shows the program running with one of the different themes of the 9210.
