Active Desk is the ultimate productivity
/ PIM / shell enhancement for the 9210. This program allows you
to see at once glance up coming appointments, tasks, todos and summaries
the status of e-mail and SMS messages. It also allows you to launch
frequently used documents and applications at the touch of the button.
All this from one screen, and there is much more too!

The Outlook Today may not be to everyone's taste. However it does
summarise all aspects of information management on the 9210, something
that was previously not present. At one glance it is possible to
see what event and tasks are coming up in the future.
The software does not just do this,
it acts as a control centre for the 9210. The launcher module will
I suspect prove very popular. It is powerful and easy to use. It
allows thing such as configuring autostart after a restart, quick
access to frequently used applications by means of Speed Launch
(press a number 1-9 to launch a program or link). It also integrates
with the 'Desk' of the 9210. Programs and documents of the Desk
can be launched by means of the Launch List, an innovative and useful
solution to the problem of an over cluttered Desk.
The program can be used to seamlessly
enter appointments, events and other objects into the Agenda file.
The program also has full control over the editing of such objects
so that for example the due date of an task can easily be changed
and then crossed out.
Active Desk has the function to take
over Desk (i.e. the Desk key when pressed will bring up Active Desk).
Using this program instead of Desk is a real possibility and for
some it will be far easier.
This program is one of a select few
of really useful programs for the 9210. It is programs like this
which make or break the success of a machine and I'm glad to see
such a program arrive. Congratulations are due to the author for
a truly excellent program.

Active Desk is a functionally rich,
productivity enhancement tool for the Nokia 9200 Communicator Series.
It is fully integrated with the key Nokia 9200 applications –
including Calendar, Messaging, and Desk. Active Desk provides a
feature rich alternative to the built-in Desk application. The application
delivers a common interface to the user providing a consolidated
view of agenda and messages, with the ability to launch applications
interactively – similar to the Windows Start button –
or automatically launch applications at system reset. The overall
result is enhanced user productivity and an increase in the overall
usability of the Communicator device.
The application is made up of a number
of modules each delivering functionality lacking in the “out-of-the-box’
Nokia 9200 Communicator. These modules include:
- A quick view of Calendar and Tasks, delivering an easy to use
interface with quick commands for all common calendar and task
functions.
- Messaging Inbox summary, with the ability to create new messages
directly from the Active Desk interface.
- Application and document launcher, including automatic launch
of applications at device reset.
Active Desk as the 9200 Desktop
Active Desk can be configured as the default home, or “Desk”
application, switched to by pressing the Communicator’s Desk
key. Active Desk provides all of the functionality of the built-in
Desk application (e.g. configure a background image, launch application
and document links), together with a suite of additional features.
Active Desk can be configured to start at device reset and so is always
available to the user. The tool also provides the ability to automatically
start a list of additional applications at reset, and to create “speed
launch” shortcut keys to quickly launch frequently used applications
and documents.
Active Desk as "Outlook Today" View
Alternatively, Active Desk can be configured to be launched by the
Nokia 9200 Communicator’s Calendar key, and used as an additional
view of agenda entries. This will provide the user with an “Outlook
Today” styled interface into the agenda – a consolidated
view of all upcoming appointments, tasks, and messages, with easy
to use commands to modify existing entries, or to create new entries.
Context Sensitive Help
Active Desk is provided with full context sensitive help, providing
users with the detailed information they may require to get the
full benefits out of the tool.
