Nokia 9290 Shown at Comdex

From the Symbian website:

Attendees at the Comdex show in Las Vegas (starting Monday 12 November) will be able to see the first open Symbian OS phone for the American market: the Nokia 9290 Communicator. The Nokia 9290 will be available in the first half of 2002. This is a GSM 1900 version of the Nokia 9210 already available in Europe. The 9200 Series of Communicators are the world's first integrated mobile multimedia phones featuring Symbian OS and PersonalJava. They are the first Symbian OS phones open to both C++ and Java developers. As well as being fully-featured GSM phones, the Nokia 9200 Series boasts superb data functionality: high-speed HSCSD, WAP and web browsers, SyncML and an integrated email client (POP3, IMAP4 and SMTP).

The developer community has rallied around Symbian OS and helped make the Nokia 9210 a resounding success in Europe. If in addition to the calendar, word processing, spreadsheet, presentation viewer, etc. you want to play an action game, enjoy a video clip or connect to your office server, it is likely that a software house in the Symbian community has already started to develop the application you need. Forum Nokia is co-operating with application developers to ensure the timely development of add-on software. Symbian, Nokia's partners and other ISVs are working to deliver many C++ and Java applications for Nokia 9200 Series Communicators. Symbian OS now has a market lead in Western Europe, according to independent analysts firm Canalys. Its November 1st research release states that in the third quarter in Western Europe: 'Nokia takes lead with 28.3% share of [the mobile device] market, helping Symbian to 34% share by OS.' With GSM coverage increasing in the US, this success is set to repeat itself with the availability of the Nokia 9290.

For American software developers discovering the Nokia 9290, many resources are available on the Forum Nokia and Symbian Developer Network websites. Three new papers should prove particularly helpful: Getting started with C++ on the Nokia 9200 Series Communicator, Getting started with C++ on the Nokia 9200 Series Communicator, and Symbian OS for Palm OS developers. The latter looks at the similarities between Palm OS and Symbian OS, and describes the architecture of Symbian OS in more detail. The first two are primers targeted respectively at C++ and Java developers.

Secondly there is Versit Utils which enables you take vCal and vCard files and integrate them into Contacts and Calendar. Thirdly there is Beamer a program that can be used to send files to another 9210. This can be used to get round the 1mb limit that is currently in place due to bugs.

From website @ http://koti.mbnet.fi/~mertama/

Picture message viewer allows you to view famous picture messages with 9210.

Versit Utils is two tiny applications for vCard and vCalendar entries. If you have received these entries via email, or have them as a file - with Versit Utils you can store them into Contacts or Calendar databases.

PsiNT Release Alpha Multimedia Player for 9210

PsiNT have released, later than expected, their Multimedia Player for the Nokia 9210. The alpha version plays both WAV files and MP3 files. Initial indications suggest that the software is still rathern buggy and does not work very well. However this is to be expected in an alpha version.

Although no information is available on the PsiNT website the program can be downloaded from their download page or FTP site:
http://www.psiloc.com/nokia/eng/download/index.html
ftp://psiloc.com

From people's first comments it seems that the software is still buggy.

Hope at Epocn.com comments that "The interface is very simple, and it will not pause if you press Menu key. The quality of sound is even worse than MP3Go, and the time indicator just jumps with several seconds. I hope the Beta version will be much better."

The website aikon.ch says that "playing of the MP3's is still in the wrong speed and with the WAV's play is jumpy and of low quality. Unfortunately the playlist function, which is apparently intended is not currently available" (translated from German).

It would seem that unless you are very keen to try the player this version is best avoided. You can read further comments in the forum.
