Mobile Musings direct to your 9210

TANKERx, a well known and respected (no laughing at the back) member of this site's forum, has opened the excellent website Mobile Musings. You should all visit now and familiarise yourself with it. The site is desinged for viewing on the 9210 (unlike this site! - though as Tanker himself mentions there is a mobile version - just not very public yet). However Tanker's site has a great outlook. He's got a good taste in 'other' news sites too!

About Mobile Musings:

Goal
With an emphasis on Symbian technology, this site will provide a regular digest of news, views, opinions, rants and raves, designed specifically for viewing while on the go using a mobile device (such as the Nokia 9210).

The site will be updated throughout the day. The simplicity of the site's structure and goal means that such work can be done straight from a 9210 without the need for any fancy software. On a bad day, the site will only be updated once but should average about two to three updates a day.

Articles will be archived every two weeks (this may change) and made available to view in a separate area.

What This Site Is Not
This site is not a discussion forum (though there will be a letters page) giving a right to reply and/or comment. Neither will it be targetted as a substitute to other news sites such as All About ER6. Rather, it will compliment such sites and, where appropriate, will provide the same news stories (with permission).

One of the main benefits of Symbian technology is the ability to install software without the need of a PC. In order to save connection time, this site may link to such software, but will never link to illegal distributions of software. If you want cracked or hacked software, go somewhere else!

Nokia and Siemens to collaborate on Series 60

Siemens have reaffirmed their commitment to Symbian by announcing a co-operation agreement with Nokia. Siemens will start by liscening Series 60 (as previously announced) and work on developing it and applications for it further.

Full Press Release:

Nokia and Siemens to Collaborate on Mobile Software, Application Development and Implementation based on Open and Common Standards

May 16, 2002 - Nokia and Siemens Information and Communication Mobile (Siemens IC Mobile) today announced that the companies have agreed on a framework of collaboration to create and drive the implementation of mobile terminal software based on open standards. Within this framework the companies will start to explore new opportunities to achieve maximum interoperability between mobile devices and applications, thus adding value for operators, developers, corporations and consumers. The companies intend to define and promote common functionality and features for different mobile terminal platform categories throughout the industry.

As the first steps in the collaboration, Nokia and Siemens have agreed to combine their efforts in mobile terminal software applications by providing common tools and by creating new market-making opportunities for developers. In addition, Siemens will license the Series 60 software platform and start to further develop the platform together with Nokia.

Nokia and Siemens are thus taking the first step to create and drive the market for mobile devices based on open standards. Both parties are committed to developing and implementing common software functions and features for mobile devices. Furthermore, the companies intend to increase and serve the developer community for mobile terminal software applications.

"Interoperability is the key for the future," says Peter Zapf, President of Mobile Phones within the Information and Communication Mobile Group. "In order to achieve consumer and operator acceptance, full interoperability between different devices, applications, services and networks has to be achieved. Siemens and Nokia will together drive the future of mobile communication and we invite other players in the market to join us."

"This announcement is significant for the entire mobile industry, as our collaboration with Siemens will create the first real manifestation of a vision for handset-vendor- independent and interoperable solutions based on open industry standards. This initiative will benefit developers and operators not only because of the common software design, but also through the combined ability that Nokia and Siemens will be able to provide in distributing the applications and tools," says Pertti Korhonen, Senior Vice President, Mobile Software, Nokia.

To further increase interoperability, the companies have also agreed to support and actively contribute to the work on key open standards and technologies in respective standardization and industry forums. In addition, the companies aim to identify new areas in which they can implement and promote open standards.

Together with Nokia, Siemens will implement the Series 60 software platform in Symbian OS-based smart phones. The companies will also work together on the future development of the Series 60. Thus, programming interfaces, that are necessary to develop applications and related tools, will be available to software developers worldwide on both companies' websites. As the programming interfaces will be the same, developers will enjoy significant benefits through easy access to both the Nokia and Siemens product platforms.

Symbian.infor are a Benelux Usergroup for Symbian based devices and they are holding a user meeting in Utrecht, The Netherlands. They are probably the best Symbian usergroup in the world, producing an excellent magasine (in Dutch sadly!), and being very freidnly. Although there are also plenty of English speakers (as well as Dutch and German).

More details:

The program will be the same as on previous meetings: a live helpdesk, presentations and training sessions, demonstrations of (new) Symbian powered devices and software by developers (Sander van der Wal of MBrainsoftware will demonstrate his PDF+, TomTom will present their EPOC and Symbian software such as Citymaps, Maps on Line, V-Rally etc.), discount corners for hard and software, and more. All presentations will be given in Dutch, while the helpdesk will be available in Dutch, English, French, and German.

New: iLines for the 9210 from Symbianware

Symbianware, the well known developers of iContacts for ER5, have released iLines for the Nokia 9210. iLines is shareware ($15) and consists of a package of three games: Lines, Squares and Blocks. The games are well implemented and there is a free trial version available. Don't we just all love shareware :)!

iLines is a set of three addictive board games. They are Lines, Squares and Blocks. Amazing colour graphics, smooth animation and nice sound. Why not to try? But beware it can fascinate you ;).

The objective of the game is to gain the maximum score by arranging balls of the same color into lines (squares, blocks). The goal is to remove as many balls as possible by creating horizontal, vertical, or diagonal lines (or squares, blocks) of the same color balls. You can move any ball to any cell on the game board, but it cannot jump over other balls. When some balls are formed up (in line, block or square) they're eliminated and you're awarded a certain amount of points. However, each time you aren't able to eliminate balls, 3 more balls appear on the game field. The game is finished when all the fields are filled in with the balls.

You can choose any of three different game modes. They are very similar, except the shapes you need to create are different for every type:

Lines - You need to create horizontal, vertical, or diagonal lines of five or more balls of the same color.
Squares - You need to make rectangular shapes of four or more balls of the same color.
Blocks - Minimum seven adjacent balls. Two balls are adjacent if they make a vertical or horizontal line (not diagonal).
