Full Press Release: MACROMEDIA FLASH PLAYER SUPPORT ANNOUNCED FOR THE NOKIA 9200 COMMUNICATOR SERIES Macromedia Flash MX enables developers to create rich device content and applications CeBIT 2002Hannover, GermanyMarch 13, 2002Macromedia, Inc. (Nasdaq: MACR) today announced that Macromedia Flash Player support will be available for the Nokia 9200 Communicator Series, an integrated device for mobile professionals that combines a high-resolution color display with multimedia capabilities. Macromedia Flash Player is the leading rich client for Internet content and applications across the broadest range of platforms and devices. Macromedia Flash MX, which will ship on March 15, contains new features and templates that will enable rapid creation of content and applications for Internet-enabled devices. For more information on Macromedia Flash MX, please visit www.macromedia.com/go/flashmx.
"Macromedia Flash is the standard for delivering rich, interactive content to leading devices and platforms. Macromedia Flash MX enables developers to be more productive when creating content and applications that target existing versions of the player for mobile carriers and service providers," said Beth Davis, general manager, Macromedia. "With the Nokia 9200 Communicator Series, Nokia is making mobile devices even more useful for the mobile professional by delivering a device that serves as a phone, Internet terminal, and organizer in one connected handset."
Zoomamap has been using Macromedia Flash to develop a rich location-based mapping application for the Nokia 9210 Communicator and is already seeing the benefits of using proven technologies to create rich front-ends to applications.
"For industry players to generate meaningful revenues from the new generation of wireless applications, consumers must be shown compelling advantages over existing technologies. To drive consumer adoption, these applications should provide a richer, more visual experience, improved ease of use, and excellent performance over today's networks," said Jean-Marc Holder, CEO, Zoomamap. "Thanks to Macromedia Flash, we were able to create such an application, integrate content from a variety of sources, and be up and running on the extremely popular Nokia 9210 Communicator, in a matter of days."

Many consumer electronics manufacturers, mobile carriers, and service providers are using Macromedia Flash content as a value-added service to differentiate themselves from their competitors by ensuring their customers have engaging content specifically tuned for their devices, which also increases customer retention and adds potential new revenue streams.
Content and applications can be easily created in Macromedia Flash MX to run on devices that support earlier versions of Macromedia Flash Player. Nokia 9210 MDIP beta updated at Forum Nokia
|
A new version of the beta MDIP software for the Nokia 9210 is now available via Forum Nokia. MDIP is a java subset that allows the running of small programs. It is supported on many phone types. Software can be downloaded from Forum Nokia (free registration required) to run and make these small programs.
More information @ http://www.forum.nokia.com/javaforum/main/1,35452,1_0_20,00.html
What is MDIP? The Mobile Information Device Profile (MIDP) is a set of Java Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) which, together with the Connected Limited Device Configuration (CLDC), provides a complete Java application runtime environment targeted at mobile information devices--including cellular phones. The applications for MIDP Java devices must be written in MIDP Java. A PJava application does not work in MIDP Java devices.
Difference between Personal Java and MDIP? PersonalJava provides a runtime environment based on the Java 1.1 platform. It is not Java 2 platform like J2ME (Java 2 Micro Edition), which is tailored for consumer and embedded devices, like mobile phones. In other words Personal Java is an older and bigger environment than J2ME but it also provides richer development platform
The Mobile Information Device Profile (MIDP) is a set of JavaTM Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) which, together with the Connected Limited Device Configuration (CLDC), provides a complete J2METM application runtime environment targeted at mobile information devices including mobile phones and entry-level PDAs.
What is MIDlet? MIDlet is a MIDP application and runs on devices that support MIDP. MIDlet uses only the APIs defined by the MIDP and CLDC specifications. It is also an interface in the MIDlet API package of MIDP.
