MindTerm 2.0 (SSH Client) for the 9210
|
Mindterm is a full-fledged implementation of SSH1 and SSH2 written in Java. The program is stable, but needs lots of memory as with all the other Java apps for the 9210. It does however represent a freeware SSH client!
The author makes some interesting comments about porting to Java on his website, where you are also able to download a SIS file (make sure you read the page first). This program should perhaps be considered as a beta, and only installed if you know what you are doing.
The author's website is http://scn.snow.nl/~fkraak/mindterm/index.html
Notes from website: Introduction Mindterm is a full-fledged implementation of SSH1 and SSH2 written in Java. Epoc32 is an embedded operating system used in various types of Psion, as well as the Nokia 9xx0 line of mobile phones. The latter is what I have primarily tested this application with. Java supposedly doesn't need porting, but due to the various limitations of the embedded platform sacrifices in functionality had to be made for it to be usable. Furthermore, there are certain technical limitations in the platform that make running an 'out-of-the-box' mindterm impossible. Hence, this port.
Now, a few remarks. First of all: The stability of a Nokia 9210 is not too good. Rather poor, really. Maybe newer versions of the platform and/or the java runtime environment in there are more stable, but I'm not holding my breath. I have experienced severe instability and a complete and utter failure on the part of mindterm to work after as little as two consecutive installations on the same device. So use this .SIS file only once, or face the consequences. If you *really* feel the need to upgrade it, get the .jar file and move that to the proper location by hand. (I will be providing that here as well, don't worry.)

New integrated Quartz SDK for Symbian OS v6.1
|
Symbian have released through SymbianDevNet a combined version of the developer SDK for Quartz (pen based mediaphone communicators) ER 6.1. The combined SDK includes support for both C++ and Java. Er6.1 includes packet data support.
From the website:
Symbian OS v6.1, the Packet Data release of the operating system for advanced data-enabled mobile phones, shipped earlier this year to Symbian licensees. This latest release of Symbian OS primarily includes support for GPRS, Bluetooth 1.0b and WAP 1.2. After an extensive testing period, the SDK for the Symbian OS reference design for pen-base mobile phones (code-named Quartz) is now available to developers at the Symbian Developer Network website.
For the first time, the SDK is available as a single download for both C++ and Java developers, allowing content, service and application providers to target both languages more conveniently. Java developers in particular can benefit from this release since Symbian OS v6.1 for Quartz, which includes Symbian’s complete PersonalJava 3.0.1 JVM implementation and JavaPhone 1.0.0, is Sun's reference implementation for the JavaPhone APIs.
Using the Symbian SDK, both C++ and Java developers will be able to target their solutions at forthcoming Symbian OS phones from the world's leading mobile phone manufacturers.
The latest SDK includes many significant enhancements including the latest version of the Symbian OS emulator for testing and debugging code, new and improved tools (including GDBSTUB for on-target debugging) and greatly enhanced system documentation and example code. Major documentation changes include:
- a GUI Controls Catalogue and a Quartz Style Guide.
- documentation on many Quartz-specific APIs, including Contacts Shared UI, Dialog Framework, Dialogs and Utilities
- documentation for new APIs introduced in Symbian OS v6.1 (Calendar Conversion, Localized Names of Plug-ins, Bluetooth)
- documentation of several previously undocumented APIs, including: Application Architecture Framework, Application Architecture Services, Application Utilities, Array Keys, B-Trees, Clock, Incremental Matcher, Message Window, Messaging Architecture, Open Font System, Panic Categories and Numbers, Persistent Paged Sets, Print Preview, Printing, Recognizers, Reference Counting Objects and System Sounds.
- enhanced and expanded documentation for existing APIs, including: DBMS, Reference Counting Objects, Array Keys, Lexical Analysis, Handles, Dynamically Loading Link Libraries and Bluetooth.
Symbian OS Java documentation has also been augmented with the addition of several tutorials, updated examples and brand new introductory content for developers new to the platform.

Kylom Release Final Version of Monnaie for 9210
|
Kylom have released a final version of their international currency converter for the 9210. Updates in this release include support for German, and Polish (adding to French and English) as well as faster internet updates.
The following has been posted on their website where you can download the new version (http://www.kylom.com):
"Final" upload of Monnaie for Nokia Communicator 9210: version 6.00 (6 stands for Epoc ER6) of Monnaie is now finalised and available for download. The big improvement on the beta versions is the speed of the internet updates: the server now used for these updates (Yahoo Finance) is much faster than the previous one. This sofware is available in English, French, German and Polish (all four languages from the same installation file monnaie.sis).
In their forum Kylom posted the following announcement about Portfolio (share / investment management which is well known on the ER5 platform):
After the infamous announcement of Psion, I have received a number of mails from users of Porfolio: most were asking when a 9210 version would be available. Some said that they were switching to Windows CE and suggested that Porfolio should be ported to this platform.
I have decided to go the 9210 route first, but to take this opportunity to make a complete rewrite of Porfolio. I could have tried to adapt the existing OPL code and re-compile it for 9210, now that the tools (user side and developer side) have been made available by Symbian. The result would have come earlier but would have been less than satisfying, in at least two areas: speed and memory requirements, two areas where the 9210 is not particularly "tolerant".
Porfolio for 9210 is currently being re-writen in Epoc ER6 C++. The user interface will be widely similar to the existing ER5 OPL version, with menus and commands simplified and rationalised in some areas, but with no less functionalities.
It is still time to suggest improvements!!!
