Press Release

Cellsoft, Inc. announced a unified instant messaging system for Nokia 9200 Series Communicators.

The instant messaging product, called CellIM, let’s you view buddy status and exchange instant messages even when you are not connected to the Internet. CellIM interoperates with popular desktop instant messaging systems like Yahoo and MSN.

“Instant Messaging market is growing rapidly both within enterprises and among consumers, however so far it has been challenging to do instant messaging over wireless networks. Cellsoft’s CellIM solution will solve that challenge and offers full instant messaging and unified Buddy List capability for Nokia 9200 Series”, said Esa Ketola, President, Cellsoft, Inc.

“Cellsoft has developed StayOnline server technology, which allows instant messaging over the popular SMS thus keeping end-users always connected”, Ketola continued.

Initially, CellIM will run on Nokia 9200 Series communicator. Other Symbian OS handsets will be supported as they become available.

CellIM with StayOnline technology is targeted for operators, enterprises and ISPs.

New: Freeware Examples from Symbian

Symbian, via its developer website, has made available as examples two free application that might also be useful for the ordinary user. Voice Control, dveloped by Ashley Montanaro allows you to use your voice to control some aspects of your 9210. Game, developed by Kenny Guy is shoot 'em up game that has been avaiable before.

Voice control
Ashley Montanaro, Software Engineer at Symbian Cambridge, developed "Voice control", an application for the Nokia 9210 Communicator that allows the user to perform various operations using voice commands. This paper describes how the application was written, the features of the APIs that were used, and the design decisions that were taken. It assumes basic knowledge of Symbian OS development. It should be noted that the system was developed more as a sample than a finished application, so the user interface is rough in places and the application can be improved in a few places.

A shoot'em up game
Kenneth Guy, Senior Software Engineer at Symbian, describes how he went about writing a simple scrolling shoot'em up game for the Nokia 9210 Communicator. You control a ship that flies across a scrolling landscape, avoiding crashing into rocks, and shooting bad guys. He wrote it as an exercise in integrating assembler and C++ and to explore developing for the Nokia 9210 under Linux.
