I downloaded this and it seems to have fixed the bug with attachments to a calendar entry being lost if they were edited on the Communicator, and the connect systray applet now has a reconnect menu item, i.e. it does not try to connect automatically (which never worked very well...) so those are improvements. Still managed to hang my PC when the phone fell over though.

Developer News Example Java & Ask the Expert

All About ER6 regular developer roundup is here. Forum Nokia is as busy as ever and there have been several updates and releases. Symbian have postponed their developer conference.

Forum Nokia is also offering a download of a free 'Game of Life' Java game (as an example to developers).

Example Java Game of Life Program
Nokia have released an example program for Developers which is based on the well known Game of Life. The Game of Life is not your typical computer game. It is a 'cellular automaton', and was invented by Cambridge mathematician John Conway. There is no SIS file in the download, but the source is avialble and it acts as an excellent example for Java programming on the 9210. This is not intended for end users, but rather as an example to developers as in attested by the 30 page PDF file that comes with the download.

Other Java Updates
There is also a new developer suite for Personal Java available on the forum Nokia website.
From website:Nokia Developer's Suite Beta 0.1 for the Java™ 2 Platform, Micro Edition and the PersonalJava™ Application Environment (PJAE) are tools that creates together with Borland JBuilder a full development environment for application development.

Other Forum Nokia Updates
Nokia have recently opened a new Messaging section which includes details of Smart Messaging and Multimedia Messaging. The bluetooth section has also been updated. The discussion areas are also much eaiser to navigate after an interface update.

ExpertZone on Crystal UI
Nokia are planning an ExpertZone on the topic of Programming with Symbian Crystal 6.0 User Interface. This gives developers a chance to ask questions relating to control components creation and manipulation for the Nokia 9210 Communicator. Questions are then selected, answered and finally placed in the public FAQ.

Nokia have published the following timetable for the event:

Experts:
Phong Vu Senior Technology Expert (Nokia)
Mika Kinnunen Technology Expert (Nokia)
Tuomas Eerola Senior Technology Expert (Nokia)
Ari Aumala Technology Expert (Nokia)
Topi Reini Technology Expert (Nokia)

Schedule:
  • 15/Oct/2001 08:00 (GMT) Zone open for questions
  • 17/Oct/2001 20:00 (GMT) Last day to enter questions
  • 19/Oct/2001 16:00 (GMT) The selected answers are published
  • 30/Nov/2001 00:00 (GMT) This Expert Zone is closed and selected answers are moved to the FAQ

From the Nokia site describing ExpertZones :
Forum Nokia Expert Zone
In the Forum Nokia Expert Zone panels of leading experts give posted responses to questions of individual Forum Nokia members about featured technical topics.

Forum Nokia members have a certain number of days to submit their questions, after which the question phase is closed and the experts prepare their responses to the most relevant and commonly asked questions. The answers are then posted in the Expert Zone for a set period of time and then added to the appropriate FAQ archive. Please note that every published answer is accessible to all Forum Nokia members, but questioners names' are not made public.

As always access to Forum Nokia is for reGistered (which you can do for free) members only. http://www.forum.nokia.com

Symbian postpone Developer Conference
As a result of the recent terrorist attacks in the United States, and the effect this has had on global travel, Symbian has, with regret, decided to postpone the Symbian Developer Expo due to be held in November. The event is now being rescheduled to take place in Europe in Spring 2002, after the CeBIT and CTIA shows.

Confirmed dates for the rescheduled Developer Expo will be made public in due course. All current sponsors and exhibitors are being offered the opportunity to sponsor or exhibit at the new show.

Java VNC Viewer for 9210

Imhoetek have a Java VNC Viewer for EPOC machines including the Nokia 9210. The VNC clinet server protocol is well known and allows you over an internet connection to use your 9210 to take control of a computer running VNC Server.

Thus the 9210 can be used to remotely control another computer.

From Imhotek website:
VNC stands for Virtual Network Computing. It is, in essence, a remote display system which allows you to view a computing 'desktop' environment not only on the machine where it is running, but from anywhere on the Internet and from a wide variety of machine architectures.

VNC was produced by Olivetti labs, which has since been brought by AT&T. You can find out more about the product, and ports available by looking at the AT&T research website: http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc.

Why port to EPOC?
At Imhotek, we use VNC to connect to many of our servers. Some staff happen to have Psion machines, in particular the Series 7 and Netbook, which have large enough screens to make controlling an NT or Unix server a sensible thing to be able to do.

VNC has a Java version, freely available from AT&T. When used on EPOC this is a little clumsy. So, we have added a couple of extra buttons and functions to enable easier operation from the psion.

If you are interested in obtaining our source code, contact us. Otherwise, the .SIS file is available for download from our downloads section.

Added Functionality
- Program output redirected to \logs\java\java.txt

- Port and Password options have been placed as dialog boxes on the first screen, rather than entered as parameters

- Help button added to 'remind' us how to navigate the psion window around the larger server screen

- The whole program runs as a Java application, from the Psion applications panel

Use your 9210 with NFS FileSystem (Linux/Unix)

From Ki Ag website @ http://www.ki-ag.de/html/p3nfs.html (go there for downloads)

The Problem
You want to copy files from and to your NOKIA Communicator from a UNIX/LINUX based system. While there is the very nice PLP-Tools package for devices under EPOC R5 (like Psion), this does not work for the Communicator anymore.

The Solution
If you have been using Psion devices alongside with UNIXish operating systems for a long time, you will probably remember (or even still use ;) the p3nfs software by Rudolf Knig, which makes basic NFS functionality available on the Psion.

The software has been ressurected by him and has been extended to work on EPOC R6 and specifically on the NOKIA Communicator. While at some point the PLP-Tools should integrate this functionality, you may use this solution in the meantime.

To use the Software, download this file and follow the instructions in README.NOKIA. The package contains a prebuilt LINUX binary.

Please note the following caveats:

This software is free but not heavily tested. We don't promise
anything (but it works without problems for us).
There are some strange things with flow control on the NOKIA (basically there seems to be no real flow control) which may lead to unexpected results.
The UNIX side works for our RedHat systems here, but we think it
should work for almost all UNIX/LINUX systems.

Switcher Freeware for 9210

KI AG have made available Nokia Communicator Switcher a freeware program that does some of the functions of TaskManager. The Program is a Task Switcher, but also allows you to close down Tasks thus freeing up memory which is often vital in getting some programs running. Excellent and Recommended.

From website

Task-Switcher will let you:

list your running applications

tell you how big they are in terms of memory usage
close applications
switch to an application even if it is not a graphical one
In short: You regain the "Open Programs" utility, which you originally lost in EPOC R6.

Sanyo Shows Mediaphone at CREATAC

Sanyo, who showed a Quartz (mediaphone) at CREATAC (a Japanese computer show) have done so again this year. A few more details have emerged with the processor being a 66MHz ARM (similar to the 5mx @ 33 Mhz). MMC cards are also supported.

It would be great if this could come to fruition, but as with all thing I guess it is a case of wait and see. You can see pictures from last year model here:
/allabouter6-late/mediaphone/features/snayo.php

The following story is taken from IDG.net:

Sanyo Electric Co. Ltd. has taken the wraps off an updated prototype of its planned personal digital assistant (PDA) based on the Symbian operating system at the CEATEC Japan 2001 exhibition, which opened just outside of Tokyo

The new version shares most of the looks and features of the company's first public prototype, which was unveiled at last year's CEATEC show, although it is based on the version 6.1 software from Symbian Ltd. Last year's model was based on version 6.0.

Like the previous model, it features a color LCD (liquid crystal display) of around 4 inches (10 centimeters) in size, capable of QVGA (320 by 240 pixel) resolution and is based on an ARM microprocessor running at 66MHz, said Teruhiro Yamada, chief planner from Sanyo's research and development headquarters in Tokyo. It also sports a slot for Multimedia Card (MMC) memory cards.

However, also like last year, the company still has no concrete plans to sell the PDA, which it has been developing under the Lyra codename. A commercial product is getting closer -- some prototypes on display had dispensed with the Lyra name and carried the product name 'ESG-EP100' -- and Yamada said he hopes it will go on sale "maybe next year."

Should Sanyo enter the PDA market, it will become the latest in a line of major Japanese computer and consumer electronics makers to enter the market. After being dominated by Sharp Corp.'s Zaurus for several years, competition increased last year when Sony Corp. launched its Clie PDA. This year, Toshiba Corp. has started selling its own product and NEC Corp. has also announced plans to enter the market later this year. Other companies, such as Casio Computer Co. Ltd., are also selling PDAs in the local market.

External Dicatphone Released by PsiNT

PsiNT have released a very useful tool. The software, external dictophone, allows you to use the recording functions of the Nokia 9210 by a keypress on the phone side of the unit (when the PDA is closed).

This is one of the most popular requests on how to improve the communicator and is something that was found on both Psion and the 9110.

From the PsiNT website:
External Dictaphone is a tool which implements a very important and useful function missing in Nokia 9210 (although it was present in 9110!): access to Digital Recorder from phone side and the ability of creating voice notes and recording phone conversations without opening Communicator cover and browsing through several menus and screens on PDA side.

External Dictaphone can be used in two modes (depending on your settings): you can make your recordings by either pressing and holding any key (recording stops when the key is released) or by pressing a key to start recording and then pressing it once again to finish it.

Furthermore, External Dictaphone also provides quick access to Digital Recorder on PDA side: now you can start recording with a (customizable) hotkey from any application and menu. Separate hotkey can be set for launching default Voice Recorder application.

External Dictaphone can be customized to suit everyone's preferences: how long a key is to be pressed to start recording, recording to single (appending) or multiple WAV files, default folder to store recordings, recording time limit, confirmation beeps on/off, sound quality (normal/compressed) and playback volume.

New voice notes are signalized with a window on PDA display. After pressing OK you are presented with a list of all available voice notes. Now you can listen to selected files, record a new note or delete old notes.

Changes in 0.96:
- added Rename and Open with Recorder options in Note Manager
- Note Manager shows size of voice note and free disk space
- option to disable front keypad recording
- few bug fixes and cosmetic changes

Changes in 0.95:
- advanced settings and configuration
- Voice notes manager (playback, recording new notes, deleting notes)
- recording to single or multiple (separate) WAV files
- two different modes: "Press and hold" and "Press and release"
- customizable hotkeys for recording voice notes from PDA side and launching note manager
- adjustable limit of recording time
