Nokia 92x0 Review: SkiFlying

SkiFlying - from RedLynx

Clean and quick, over in a few minutes and ready to use, can't fault it.

The Game Itself.

The plot in this one is reasonably simple, you ski down the slope and see how far you can keep the little guy in the air for by adjusting his position. It definately has the feel of pulling a game out of the 80s kicking and screaming into the 21st century. It reminds me of the old trials bikes games and stunt BMX games but with good graphics and skis.

How does it play?

Well it's a slow starter, which I suppose is forgiveable due to the pretty graphics, but it can be annoying. You spend a while looking at this splash screen. Then other times the game has loaded and run very fast. The inconsistency is still a niggle, and if I receive an SMS while playing the game nearly dies.

I started it up and went straight into the practice mode, which is a good thing because despite relatively simple control (just the direction pad), it's quite hard to play. Taking off and being airborne is simple, but landing is an entirely different manner, I think I've managed to kill or cripple the little bloke the way I've landed him.
How he started....

....to how he finished after 7 somersaults (all on the ground).

The 4 different slopes are very nicely drawn, through the man could be classed as a touch too small as in certain lighting conditions he's too hard to see. After you've played for a while though the controls and the actual process of landing become second nature and landing the geezer becomes something that happens rather than something to concentrate on.

Once you've done the training (I really do recommend this), you can go into the tour mode. The essense of this is to take 4 runs at each hill and achieve the best score you can. Once the tour is completed your points are totalled and entered onto the high score table. Although tour mode is only playing against yourself and the high score table, I recommend you practice first in the training mode to get used to controlling your bloke.

All in all a well thought out game with pretty graphics and a simple operation. Though sometimes not as fast and fluid as can be a good game nontheless.
