Nokia named as "world's most sustainable technology company"
Nokia has been named as the world's most sustainable technology company according to the 2009/10 edition of the Dow Jones Sustainability Index. Already rated for several years as the leader within the Europe and Communications categories, this year Nokia was also chosen as "World Technology Supersector Leader", making it number one across the entire global technology sector. Maemo 5 design documentation on Forum Nokia
Forum Nokia has published a number of UI design documents for Maemo 5. The published documents include Freemantle Layout Guide (introduces the exact layout and graphics of Fremantle), Hildon 2.2 Style Guide (explains the user interface principles) and Hildon 2.2 Widget Specification (specifies the Hildon 2.2 widgets). Early this month Forum Nokia also published a on redesigning Maemo 4 applications for Maemo 5.

Which three heavyweights will the smartphone market support?
While watching an interview recorded at the Gnomedex conference over the summer, I was struck with a statement from Micah Baldwin. In talking about the startup environment online with Jolie O'Dell, and specifically social networks, he said that any market can comfortably take three major players in the space. And given the crowded nature of the Smartphone OS market, do we have three clear heavyweights?

Tour of the Experience floor at Nokia World 2009
In the two video embedded in this news story I give you a whistle stop tour of the Nokia World experience lounge (show floor). You'll see highlights from all the devices announced at Nokia World. There's a brief glimpse of the N900 in the part 1 and a longer look at the N900 running Bounce Evolution in part 2. Bounce Evolution is a game that uses the N900's accelerometer to control movement and can be used on conjunction with the TV-out functionality for (last generation) console like gaming.

China Telecom develop first 3G Maemo tablet not made by Nokia
Maemo is mostly an open source platform and that means that anyone can use most of it on their own products, which means Maemo isn't just restricted to Nokia products. As part of a product range called Optima, China Telecom has developed a pocket computer with integrated 3G (CDMA2000 so it won't work in Europe or America) and Wi-Fi with a 4.3 inch screen and 2600 mAh battery. The specs sound good but compatibility issues not to say language issues mean that it almost certainly won't be available outside China. Video and images below.

You can watch the presentations from Nokia World in the comfort of your own living room or office, thanks to Nokia's events team, with a live page to bookmark and then keep an eye on throughout tomorrow and Thursday. The first keynote kicks off at 8am BST, 9am CET, so you might want to set an alarm if you're in the UK! Nokia N900 - Maemo 5-powered mobile computing
Nokia has announced the Nokia N900, a Maemo 5-powered device. Maemo 5 is the evolution of Nokia's previous generation of Internet Tablets and aims to occupy the space created by the convergence of mobile phones, laptops and the Internet. The N900 features a horizontal slider design with a three line QWERTY keyboard, a 3.5 inch WVGA (800 x 600) touch screen, ARM Cortex-A8 600 MHz processor with 256MB of RAM (and 768MB of virtual memory), 5.0 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics, tri-band WCDMA and WiFi connectivity, integrated A-GPS, 3.5 mm AV jack (audio and TV-out), and 32GB of flash storage and a microSD card slot. The N900 will be available in select markets from October 2009 at a cost of €500 before taxes and subsidies. Read on for further details and comment.
