Yes, you can use any external modem that has a serial port connection (so long as your EPOC device also has a serial cable).
You will need a Null Modem Adaptor. This is because both the EPOC device and the Modem are attached to the computer (they are the terminals while the desktop computer is the host). To attach the two terminals together it is nescessary to chnage over some wires. This is what the null modem adaptor does. (The most obvious thing about this is that both the EPOC and modem cables can notbe joined together because they are noth female. So th null modem adaptor changes over a few wires, makes sure you can plug the Modem and Epoc cables together. You may also find it necessary to buy a pin converter - this may be needed depending upon the size on your modem cable (if it is about the same size as the EPOC cable you need not worry - this problem is usually found on older modems).
You can buy a null modem adaptor from good electronics store. However these may not work with your EPOC device, I recommend buying one from an EPOC dealer. Mine came from Clove who I can recommend. Alternatively you can make your own null modem adaptor - the instuctions fro this can be found at http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Lakes/3216/modem.html.
Remember the null modem adaptor works only one way round, before complaining it doesn't work try putting it the other way round!
