Commodore 64 Emulator Download and Review for 9210 Posted Saturday, July 21, 2001 by Rafe
Recenetly a Commodore 64 Emulator for the Nokia 9210 has been released. Now you can use hundreds of old games, and programs on the Nokia 9210.
All About ER6 has the download on the download page and thanks to Russ Spooner's review of the program.
The review also shows you how to use the program and where to get the programs to use with the emulator (easier said than done!) as well as giving a quick run through of the options.
From the help file: "Frodo is a Commodore 64 emulator written by Christian Bauer for Amiga, and ported to Epoc32 by Jal Panvel & Alfred E. Heggestad in the period Nov. 1999 to Jan 2000.
Frodo is also ported to many other platforms, inluding Win32, Unix, Linux, BeOS, etc."

Task Manager from PsiLoc Posted Tuesday, July 17, 2001 by Rafe
PsiLoc has released a very useful utility for the Nokia 9210. It allows you to close active tasks and do a software reboot. This allows memory to be freed up.
From PsiLoc website:
Task Manager is a tool, which adds two important functions missing from N9210's system: closing active tasks and software reboot.
Task management functions can be used to close tasks which are active in the background - it is especially useful with tasks, which once run can't be closed in any other way: Messaging, Internet, Calendar, Contacts etc.
Closing such tasks frees operating memory and allows starting other applications. Tasks which cannot be closed this way can be "killed" using Shift + End task button.
Software reboot function can be used instead of removing the battery - all you have to do is to open TaskManager's window and select "Reset Machine" function in Options dialog. Software reboot is much more convenient and, additionally, it saves the battery and Communicator's casing.
Task Manager integrates with system and is fully transparent during normal work. TaskManager's window is invoked with Desk button (pressing Desk one more time hides Task Manager opens Desk screen). Accessing Task Manager this way is very quick and convenient.
Task Manager features two more interesting functions:
- one can switch between active applications using Ctrl+Space (or "backwards" with Ctrl+Shift+Space) - there is an information about free operating (SDRAM) memory displayed in Options window. This is a very useful information, especially that it is not shown by Memory application.
Sounds promising - we have a full overview soon! See http://www.psiloc.com/nokia/eng/taskman/index.html for more.

Psion draws back from PDA market Posted Wednesday, July 11, 2001 by Rafe
It is a sad day for Psion fans today as Psion announce in their business review that they will not be releasing their bluetooth PDA nor any other bluetooth products. There some light amongst all this gloom though.
Psion will not be producing the much rumoured Revo Bluetooth device. In their press release they state that the decision 'has been driven by the division's continuing poor performance in weak and oversupplied markets for handheld computers and related cellular phone markets'.
Psion Digital will however continue the 'development of its netBook range of products for the education and corporate markets. The division's retained core development staff will focus on developing and exploiting Psion's IPR, expertise and experience to create innovative mobile networking products and solutions in high value markets.'
All in all a sad day. Its not something I ever wanted to see, but with the turndown in the PDA market we should perhaps not be surprised. What is surprising is Psion recenently announced a Revo optimised for the Far East. Perhaps we should take the optimistic view - that Psion are not out for the count but resting. Bluetooth is a technology that is not ready yet and Psion are correct not to release the new product if all it is a Revo with bluetooth. Perhaps Psion will concentrate on a netBook like device for ER6? In the mean time we have to be content with the 9210 - and I suspect Psion know that they probably would be able to live with the competition provided by the 9210. I'll write more once the impact has set in, but right now I need to go and cry somewhere!
Full Press Release: Psion PLC announces completion of business review 11 July 2001 Focus on Symbian, enterprise solutions and mobile network devices
H1 2001 trading update
Psion PLC, the mobile computing company, today announces that after a thorough examination of its businesses, it has decided to focus its future strategy on industrial and enterprise markets through Psion Teklogix; innovative markets in digital appliances through a restructured Psion Digital; and on its strategic investment in Symbian. All these activities provide client solutions through wireless networks both Wide Area and Local Area.
A restructured Psion Digital will sell and service its existing product ranges and will continue development of its netBook range of products for the education and corporate markets. The division's retained core development staff will focus on developing and exploiting Psion's IPR, expertise and experience to create innovative mobile networking products and solutions in high value markets.
The decision to implement a significant restructuring of Psion Digital has been driven by the division's continuing poor performance in weak and oversupplied markets for handheld computers and related cellular phone markets. Further commoditisation of these markets is expected next year. As a result of the Board's decision and in the light of slower than anticipated establishment of a mass market for Bluetooth products, Psion Digital will not launch its Bluetooth PDA or range of Bluetooth connectivity products planned for the second half of 2001.
Psion will take a restructuring charge of 29m to provide for redundancy costs (some 250 jobs), product assets and fixed assets, goodwill write-offs, inventory and other provisions.
First Half Revenues and Outlook
Provisional revenues for the enlarged Psion Group in the first half of 2001 were up 5% at 99 million compared with 94 million in H1 2000. Revenues for the first half in Psion Digital were 36 million compared with 77 million last year. Revenues for the first half in the Psion Teklogix division (created from the merger of Teklogix operations acquired in September 2000 and Psion's existing Enterprise division) were 63 million, compared with the 17 million in Psion's Enterprise division last year. The Group retains a strong balance sheet with no gearing and cash of 17 million.
Psion Teklogix grew broadly in line with expectations until June when the impact of the North American slowdown in capital IT spending became evident in recorded revenues and forward orders. The continuing North American economic slowdown will affect Psion Teklogix revenues in the second half.
Although Psion Teklogix continues to grow as anticipated in European markets, the risk remains that European markets will experience a similar slowdown to those in North America during the second half.
Psion PLC will announce its 2001 interim results in full on August 29, 2001.
David Levin, Psion's Chief Executive Officer said :
"As reported at the time of our Prelims in March and at the AGM in May, trading in Psion Digital has been difficult. As a result of this we are taking major action to reduce our cost base while focusing on developing and exploiting our intellectual property and know-how to secure profitable new markets."
"Psion Teklogix, operating in profitable wireless enterprise markets, will show continued growth this year, despite cutbacks in capital spending in North America. It is set to extend its position as our main operating division and we will be launching a new range of industrial products in September".
David Potter, Psion's Chairman said :
"The IT industry is experiencing its worst downturn since 1985. Against this background, it is essential that we take the hardest approach to costs, control and a return to profitability while avoiding exposure to oversupplied commodity markets. The enterprise markets of Psion Teklogix offer sound long-term growth opportunities, while Psion Digital will be focusing on its core assets in innovation and exploiting new premium markets for mobile networked devices."

Monnaie for the 9210 Beta Download Posted Tuesday, July 10, 2001 by Rafe
You can now download Monnaie for the 9210 in a beta version. All About ER6 recently reviewed this program and now you too can try it! Monnaie is a currency converter.
You can read my review of Monnaie at: /epochelp/er6/crystal/software/monnaie.htm
From the Kylom site: Just uploaded at Kylom: Monnaie for Nokia 9210.
Monnaie is the easiest to use, yet the most powerful currency converter for Symbian OS computers, for those who really mean international business: - key in an amount, or copy it from the clipboard of your Communicator - press the corresponding "currency key" - that's it: the amount is instantly converted into all the currencies of your list (up to 180, displayed in pages of 12 or 27, ordered by country or by region)
A most interesting feature is the automatic update of exchange rates via an internet connection.
Version 6.00 of Monnaie for 9210, fully functional until 30 Sept 2001 is available for download at www.kylom.com.
Check the download page of the Kylom site for the file or wait a few days until All About ER6's download section is complete along with the Communciator Software directory...
