Symbian OS Based Devices

In this section you can find out more about Symbian OS based device. There are currently several officially announced devices. These include the Nokia 9210, Nokia 9210i, Nokia 9290 (all the same fmaily of devices), the Nokia 7650 and the Sony Ericsson P800. There are three 'classes' of Symbian devices. The Communicator ckass (also known as Crystal), the UIQ class, and the Smartphone class which can run either Nokia's Series 60 UI or Symbian's Pearl UI. Siemens, Pansonic and Motorola are all thought to be producing Smartphone devices and Sanyo is thought to be producing both a devices in both UIQ and Smartphone classes. Sony Ericsson and Nokia are also both thought to be developing additional Symbian based phones.

Nokia 9210, 9290, 9210i
The Nokia 92x0 class of phones are in the Communicator class of Symbian phones. Essentially a PDA inside a mobile phone, they sport large screens and a keyboard. They include a full suite of Office programs as well as e-mail and messaging clients, web browsers and much more. There are many third party program available. The Nokia 9290 and 9210i are identical except for their operating frequencies. The 9290 is a US phone, the 9210i a European phone. The 9210 was the original European only version.

Sony Ericsson P800 and P802
The first Sony Ericsson Symbian based phone looks to be a real winner. The P800 has a large 208 x 320 pixels color touch-screen, built in camera and Internet access, it supports tri-band GSM and packet data via GPRS. It is the first Symbian OS v7.0 phone. The user interface is based on UIQ. The phone supports GSM 900, 1800 and 1900, GPRS and HSCSD and is therefore the first Symbain World phone. Software includes the expected messaging clients, web browser, contacts, angenda and much more besides. Possible the first true superphone, it exemplifies all which is good about Symbian.

Nokia 7650
The Nokia 7650 is in the Smartphone class of Symbian phons. With a built in camera this phone is one of the first to support MMS to its fullest extent. With GRPS and dual band GSM this is a European phone. On board software includes an agenda and integrated contacts together with e-mail and messaging clients, as well as games and much more. The phone supports third party programs, written in Java or C++. The phone can be sync'd to desktop clients via bluetooth or infra red.
