The Reg is a great website for IT news. If you haven't visted it
it is slightly cynical. Be warned!
Symbian
Runs out Quartz Design Reference - initially news of Quartz
Inside
Quartz: Symbian's new Palm-killer platform - a little analysis
and this lovely quote from the end..
"Incidentally, we couldn't help noticing the reaction from
what often proves to be a reliable indicator of what Redmond really
thinking -- the 'spontaneous' responses to ZDNet Feedback Forums.
Within 25 minutes of a Jesse Berst Anchordesk extolling Quartz-like
integrated devices, almost every objection to the buggers had been
posted -- without a single repetition. Small screen size, the cancer
scare, dodgy connectivity... theyre all there. So clearly someone's
worried about Quartz... "
Ericsson
demos prototype EPOC communicator - an Ericsson device is announced...
Sanyo
shows first Symbian Quartz phone - and Sanyo 'living and breathing'
according to Reg!
Psion's
Series 9, Odin found in Norwegian wood - and is this the Psion
5 replacement? The reg have this to say about the validity of it
all:
"Of course the pictures could simply be a creative use of
Photoshop, inspired by the Nordic custom of drinking hallucinogenic
reindeer urine - if the dubious but enduring myth can be believed.
According to this myth, reindeers are fond of munching fly agaric,
which is noted for its psychoactive properties, although why the
Laps would take this circuitous route to delirium when the mushrooms
themselves are lying around is beyond us. Maybe they're just taking
the piss. But we digress, and we'll update you as soon as we get
word from Psion."
Microsoft
declares war on '(inaudible)' Sh... Symbian - shh, dont tell
anyone about the one who must not be named...
Motorola
takes wraps off 'Odin' Symbian PDA - and Motorola...
Nokia,
Psion, Intel demo next gen Symbian Quartz kit - and where Quartz
is going...
Inside
Symbian's Crystal communicator - and the launch of Crystal,
news of bigger devices and speculatively and MP3 player.. Reg says:
"Finally, we noticed from the presentation by Symbian product
manager Sander Siezen that Crystal will be extended to include larger
screen sizes and different input methods. So it looks like the sub-notebook
segment is the next stop for this platform - leading to some interesting
competition between big-Crystals based on Intel's XScale and Transmeta
Crusoes... The launch of the first Crystal communicator will take
place in Prague in three weeks, at Nokia's Mobile Internet show.
So Symbian licensees are lining up like this:- Sony has bought into
the Pearl platform, the mass market smartphone coming in late 2002.
Sanyo, Motorola, Psion and Ericsson have already committed to the
Palm style phone. And Nokia will launch with Crystal. That leaves
Symbian shareholder Matsushita, but since Panasonic is a major consumer
brand we'll not very adventurously place a bet that this will be
an MP3 player based on Quartz."
