Implementations |
|
There are several Quartz implementations floating around it
seems. I have tried to explain these as far as I can below:
The
first picture here was obtained from Designing for Quartz on the
Symbian Dev Net website. I may be breaking copyright here by showing
it and if I am quite happy to remove it. I believe that this is
from a February 2000 version of Quartz (that what the document says!).
It interesting because it shows some ideas in development and some
that have been lost - we may also seem some of these implemented
in actual devices.
Todo in not on the Top App Bar, but Calc is. There is a help icon,
presumably to access a help app. Most interesting is the Shell Icon,
this is the same as the Shell App on ER5 i.e. the filing system.
It shows it is possible to see it fairly easily in Quartz, it just
hidden and open up the possibility of a traditional file based system
being used.
All the coulouring is slightly different, but on the whole what
is remarkable is that there been relatively little change over the
last 8 months.
This
is the system screen from the Emulator. You can see different colouring
and different apps on the App Bar as previously mentioned.
There is no Shell Option and some of the App Names have changed.
Connect to PC is now an option and the Time app has appeared. The
help icon has gone though. Its now built into each app. However
there seems to be some apps not viewable in the top shot. There
is a scrollbar, maybe something is hidden?
More interesting are the changes to the Menu. This screen is Launcher
where as before it was Application Option. There is also an Edit
Menu available. An extra item has appeared on the bottom bar which
I think is the amount of Disk space available.
The order the apps are displayed in has changed. I cant see the
how its done in the bottom on, the top is obviously alphabetical.
This
screenshot is from the Symbian website. The text size is different,
but this maybe due to a different zoom setting. However there are
now 5 lines of Application Buttons. More apps added and different
names and icons!
The big different is on the Top Bar where Phone is added. According
to one Symbian document this is provided by each manufacturer and
allows the device to be used as a phone, just by clicking on the
contact in Contacts.
The Bottom bar also seems some changes, they keyboard icon and
time have switched sides and there is no grayed out new e-mail icon
or indication of diskspace.
A Game of 0's and X's appears to have been added as well as a Generic
and Help App. Various name and icon changes have also occurred.

This is the Ericsson Device that is a Quartz machine. Interestingly
there a headphone attached, and several buttons down the side. Its
not the same as the shot above. We can see there yet another different
set of apps. This is clearer in the modified image I have made below:
