Introduction:
As I was playing around for the emulator for the first time two
thought ocurred to me. Firstly those people who can't download 50+
MB files might want to see what Quartz is like and second I thought,
this isn't good for the consumer - its going to destroy the competition.
It just too good! It you want the Emulator you can get it
for free from Symbian Dev Net (see links page).
First Impressions:
My first impression of the emulator were good. Very good. It was
slow (my poor computer could barely cope), but it was breath taking.
You can tell it comes from the masters of PDA usability. It is very
easy to use, I didn't have to once think about what I was doing.
I thought ER5 was easy to use, but this is in a different league.
Symbian dserve a big pat on the back. There are recognisable features,
but there is a lot that is new and some great innovations.
There are common themes throughout the emulator which I comment
on in the screenshots. However the main themes are 'less is more'
making things easier to use even if some features are removed or
hidden in customisation option. Secondly the file system is hidden
by the System Screen and the Launcher application. Instead there
is categorisation it nearly every app. I think I'm in favour of
this as it suits the device, but it takes a bit of gettinguse to
having come from a file based system.
The design fits the device (Quartz devices are Palm Like) extremely
well. I've decided I want one. Now.
