Answers
  1. What is Quartz?
Quartz is the code name for SAymbian's Mediaphones which are pen based Communicators. They are PDAs (like the Palm and PPC) with a built in mobile phones. They are the next generation of Palm like PDAs, and one of the three classes of Symbian devices.

  2. When will the first devices be available?
is no concrete answer to this. However they should first start coming to the market in the 2nd half of 2001 or first half of 2002 and volumes will build into 2002 with new devices being released. Ericsson may be releasing their Quartz device in Q4 2001.

  3. How much will they cost?
Again this is very difficult to answer. However as an estimate they may be between 200-500, depending on what you get. Prices will drop, as with all things, over time. Because they inlcude mobile phones prices are likely to be subsidised to some extent.

  4. Will Palm run the Mediaphone Symbian OS?
This is actually quite likely. The Palm GUI may be grafted onto the OS. Wait and see! See the links section for a great article on this.

  5. Where can I get the Emulator?
It is available of the SymbianDevNet site. You need to download one of the SDK's. The Java SDK is smaller if your only interested in the emulator itself. Alternatively you can order a CD which contains both SDK's.

  6. Will a GPS be built in?
Maybe. Some of the prototypes have been show running route planning type programs. This would suggest that these machine may have GPS functions built into them. An example of this can be seen on the Ericsson Page within the features section.

  7. How do I enter infromation into the device?
You can either use an on screen keyboard, or you can use the built in handwriting recognition (see the handwriting page for more info on this). It also likely once the devices become available that stowaway type keyboards will become available. Some manufacturers may even sell these as acessories, rather than the customer having to rely on a third party.

  8. How much software will be available?
This is difficult to say at this sage. However consider this - after 6 weeks the Nokia 9210 had 100 different software titles available or announced and over 30 different titles available for download. It is likely there will be similar levels if not more available for the Mediaphone.

  9. Will OPL be available?
No OPL will not be available on the Mediaphone platform. The programming option will be C++ and Java.
