Welcome to All About ER6!

Week of December 23, 2001

2002 is the year of the Smartphone (according to El Reg)

The Register has a very interestign article on future Smartphones from different manufacturers based on custom OSS but also Symbian and Microsoft Stinger. What is noticeable is how Symbian dominates the OS on the phones. It is looking to be a very good year for Smartphones (just as Symbian said).

The article mentions a phone from Sony called Stork, but its unlikely to be released ooutside Japan. Ericsson is working on Linnea to sucede the R380.

Motorola also has a Symbainphone named Paragon.

Nokia of course is producing the 7650 (code name Cameron, also there is a mention of the sucessor of the 9210 (Hilden), which will be a single chip Communicator. Thats in addition to the much rumoured Nokia 9210i (more memoy, fast processor).

All of the Smartphone are being based in the yet unreleased and unannounced Symbain Hurrucane which is due to be announced in February. Hurricane is basically the next version of Symbian OS, a cut of Symbian OS, or Symbian OS 6.1, depending on who you ask.

Still it looks very exciting.... and of course there still the prospect of Ericsson Mediaphone device reappearing, as well as devices from Sanyo, and Panasonic...
