AppForge now 9210 enabled: Visual Basic Development

AppForge, Nokia and Symbian have announced the availability (in beta) of AppForge for the Nokia Communicator. This mean programs can be written for the 9210 is Visual Basic using the AppForge addons. Also it allows easy portng between different mobile device platforms.

AppForge is already available for the Palm and PPC platdorms and many programs are made available via it. Porting program written using AppForge for other mobile dvices (such as those based on the Palm or PPC OS) will be relatively easier.

AppForge will simplify development on the Symbian platform, which is complicated (due to the sophistication of the OS), for Visual Basic Developers.

Nokia's Description:
AppForge integrates directly into Microsoft Visual Basic, enabling developers to write cross-platform applications using the development language, debugging tools and interface Visual Basic developers already know.

AppForge Professional currently provides support for Palm OS, Pocket PC, and Windows CE operating systems. Applications written with AppForge today will automatically run on the Nokia Communicator in a few short months.

Full Press Release

AppForge enables Visual Basic developers to extend applications to Nokia Communicators

Software development toolkit cuts time to develop and deploy mobile enterprise applications for the Nokia 9200 Communicator Series.

Nokia continues its developer support with AppForge co-operation.

Atlanta - (Feb. 5, 2002) - AppForge, Inc. and Nokia (NYSE: NOK) will co-operate to enable the Visual Basic developer community to create applications for the Nokia 9200 Communicator series. The software from AppForge will help Visual Basic Developers to easily extend their existing mobile applications to run on the Nokia 9200 Communicator series as well as rapidly develop new applications for them.

"Nokia's collaboration with AppForge immediately brings a significant variety of applications to the Nokia Communicator for enterprise companies around the world and opens the door for thousands more as Visual Basic developers can easily extend their applications," says Doug Armstrong, CEO of AppForge. "With the addition of the Nokia Communicator, AppForge applications will now run on over 90% of PDA devices shipping today."

"Applications are critical for selling mobile data devices in the Enterprise market," says Senior Mobile Computing Analyst Bill Crawford of US Bancorp Piper Jaffray. "With Nokia, AppForge immediately extends thousands of existing enterprise applications to the Nokia Communicator, instantly increasing the value proposition to prospective customers. AppForge allows Visual Basic developers within a company an easier way to mobilize existing applications."

Nokia began shipping the Nokia 9200 Communicator series first in Europe and Asia, and the North American version, the Nokia 9290 Communicator, is expected to be available during the first half of this year. The Nokia 9200 Communicator series combines enterprise applications, including a Word and Excel editor and a PowerPoint viewer, with a phone, WWW web browser, fax, e-mail, calendar, and multimedia capabilities.

"This co-operation is all about productivity in the enterprise," said Lee Wright, who heads Nokia's developer efforts throughout the Americas. "By working with AppForge to ensure that their application platform works with our Communicators, we'll see greater productivity in two ways: First, by cutting the time to deploy existing mobile applications on Communicators, we'll anticipate greater productivity in development teams. Second, enterprises can recognize even greater productivity improvements as new applications are developed that take full advantage of all of the advanced capabilities of the Nokia Communicator."

AppForge expects to release their new version of AppForge Professional, which will include support for the Nokia 9200 Communicator series, in June, 2002.

Since its original release in 1999, more than 50,000 developers have used the AppForge tool to deploy more than 2,500 mobile applications. Enterprises using AppForge today include Pfizer, Honeywell, Johnson Controls, CompuCom, Snapper, Inc. and Bell Canada. With AppForge, developers can write applications using Visual Basic and run those applications on multiple mobile and wireless platforms.

"ClientLink has evaluated a number of potential technologies for our clients and find AppForge to be a leader in this area.",says Jim Hamilton, President of ClientLink, a division of CompuCom. "We are excited about the integration of AppForge with the Nokia Communicator for enterprise-scale wireless solutions. This solution offers clients robust wireless applications built in Visual Basic for rapid implementation and lower ongoing support, leading to an improved return on investment for the client."

Developers interested in receiving more information about the new version of AppForge Professional with support for the Nokia 9200 Communicator series can sign up to receive e-mail updates on this and other developer tools and resources at americas.forum.nokia.com and www.forum.nokia.com.

To sign up to participate in the public beta that should be available in late March, developers should go to www.appforge.com/nokia.

EMTS (a european mobile phone services company) have released via MTIT the SalesMobile program. It is a coporate mobile sales tool that incoportaes linking to Communicator applictions with project planning and task management. It costs 80 Euros.

MTIT description:
salesmobile. acts as an excellent business tool since it consolidates the individual applications on the Communicator. For instance, existing data is linked to corporate, project and historical data and to the corresponding task lists for the enterprises in question along with the relevant contact persons. Any number of contact persons can be managed in conjunction with the respective corporate address.

salesmobile. also generates follow-up activities to be inserted in To-Do lists and which automatically appear in the calendar. This dispenses with the need for tiresome changes between the various applications, keeping the user permanently informed of customer wishes, delivery status and many other factors, and a list of activities remaining to be done is automatically generated.

Updates: Drinker and DataSafe

Joerg Wlater has released an update for his DataSafe program taking it to version 1.3. The new version allows exit of the program in screensaver mode and does not ask for confirmation on exit. There are new shortcuts and tips too.

Information:
Data Safe 9210 is a small shareware programm which allows easy access to secret data. Everybody knows the problem that you have a lot of PINs, passwords, user names and other secret data, but you cannot bear all in mind. So you often use the same password for many things, but the security is gone, or you write everything down, but this is not recommended to do with PIN or TANs.

Because of this situation I wrote this application for the Nokia communicator. The data is encrypted with the password you choose.

Data Safe uses the Twofish encryption algorithm. It is necessary that you use a password with minimum 8 characters to have enought security for your data.

Drinker by Thomas Eerola has been updated to 1.11 with more reliable simulation now used.

Description:
An application for Nokia 9200 Series Communicator and other Symbian Crystal devices. Drinker allows simulating the effect of alcohol in a human body. In real life the effect is a sum of several factors. All of them can not be noticed in the simulation model used in Drinker application. Because of this Drinker shall never be used for substituting proper medical examination.

Drinker shows the use of button groups in a Symbian application. The application also shows how to use streams in storing application data, and how to implement activation/ deactivation for infrared reception in a Symbian application.

The download and source code is available from:

New: newDIALin from NewNet for 9210

NewDIALin 9210 is a terminal emulator for the Nokia Communicator 9210/9290. The terminal engine, and user interface are based on the successful newTELnet 9210 product. This program brings to the 9210 the functions of the Terminal program of the 9110 allowing direct dial in connections as well as serial connections.

NewDIALin 9210 is a terminal emulator for the Nokia Communicator 9210/9290. The terminal engine, and user interface are based on the successful newTELnet 9210 product. The dialin connection is made via the mobile telephone. The serial line can also be used for internet or direct connections to a host at speeds up to 115Kbps.

One of the most important design considerations was ease of use, for this reason the buttons can be configured by the user to allow easy entry of standard texts, or even program functions. Any one of 2 sets of buttons can be selected for these functions. A standard text, or escape sequence is entered in a very simple form, during which any control character can also be easily entered. The user can therefore configure the complete screen for his optimal data entry environment.

NewDIALin 9210 stores the last ten remote telephone numbers connected to, to help the user easily select different hosts without having to enter their numbers for each connection. The communicator screen is smaller than its terminal counterpart. This typically results in the user having to scroll backwards and forwards to see the complete screen. Normal scrollbars can be used for this. Just drag the contents of the screen by pressing the Func key, and the direction block. The scrollbars can even be completely removed from the screen leaving a larger terminal area than before.

Another feature which can ease data entry is the "follow" cursor function. When this is selected the program will automatically scroll to follow the cursor. Depending on the program running on the host, this can be an advantage or not. For this reason, this function is normally placed on one of the buttons for easy access.

NewDIALin 9210 supports all standard ANSI, VT2xx, VT100, VT52, TVI950, WSYE 60 and ADM3A escape sequences. A special DAVID codepage for Data-Vital doctor application is implemented in addition to the standard IBM1252 codes. All data can be traced into a logfile to help diagnose any communication problems.

NewDIALin 9210 is a shareware program. It is fully functional, but will remind the user at regular intervals that he should register. After 30Days it will expire, and not allow any more connections to be made. The registration can be made simply via one of the registration partners.

Active Desk v1.50 - Includes Message Scheduler

Active Desk v1.50a is now available for download for the Nokia 9210/9290. Adds the AD Message Scheduler to the great "Outlook Today" view and advanced application management functions of Active Desk. Active Desk is shareware and on of the most popular programs available for the 9210 offering excellent enhancements.

Active Desk v1.50a is now available for download. Add the AD Message Scheduler to the great "Outlook Today" view and advanced application management functions of Active Desk. The Scheduler allows you to automate the download of email from POP3 servers to a defined schedule. E.g. download your mail each morning at 7am so it is ready for you at the start of the day - and avoid peak call charges. The upgrade also enhances many of the existing features and fixes a number of bugs. Testing has also shown a memory usage improvement of up to 15-20% (depending on configuration). This upgrade provides an additional 14 days of evaluation time for previous users who have not yet registered Active Desk.

More at http://www.activedesk9200.com

Product Overview:
Active Desk is a functionally rich, productivity enhancement tool for the Nokia 9200 Communicator Series. It is fully integrated with the key Nokia 9200 applications – including Messaging, Calendar, and Desk.

Active Desk provides:

Advanced messaging functionality through the ability to schedule the unattended sending and receiving of email. For example, create a schedule for your outgoing email to be sent and new email downloaded every morning at 7am – thus having your email ready in on your Communicator at the start of the day, and avoid the cost of peak time call charges.

Replace the built-in Desk application with an “Outlook Today” styled view of all you most important information from the Calendar and Messaging applications.

Advanced application launch functionality, including: interactive launching of applications and documents from a configurable list (similar to the Windows Start button); automatic launch of applications at system reset; configurable speed launch keys to quickly access frequently used applications and documents.

Active Desk is designed to be modular, allowing the user to select the components to be displayed. For example, the user can decide not to show the application launcher, and to use more of the screen space to show the task list.

The Active Desk modules are:

Message scheduler – send and receive email at a user defined time.

Calendar and Tasks – delivering a clear, consolidated, easy to use interface with quick commands for all common calendar and task functions.

Message summary – including the ability to create new messages (email, SMS, and fax) directly from the Active Desk interface.

Application and document launcher – with the automatic launch of applications at device reset, and speed launch keys.

Product Flexibility
Active Desk provides the user with extensive configuration options, enabling the user to customise the product to his/her needs and preferences.

Active Desk can be configured as the default home, or “Desk” application, invoked by pressing the Communicator’s Desk key. Active Desk provides all of the functionality of the built-in Desk application (e.g. configure a background image, launch applications and documents), together with a suite of additional features.

Active Desk can be configured to start at device reset and so always available to the user. The tool also provides the ability to automatically start a set of additional applications at reset, and to create “speed launch” keys to quickly launch frequently used applications and documents.

The Calendar and Task modules are fully configurable, allowing the user to customise the “Outlook Today” styled interface into the agenda. The user can define the number of days of entries to display, what types of entries, together with colour coding for the entry types.

As can be seen above, this view provides the user with much more information on one screen than is available in the built-in Calendar views.

The above is just a small sample of the configuration options available to the user.

Context Sensitive Help
Active Desk is provided with full context sensitive help, providing users with the detailed information they may require to get the full benefits out of the tool.
