Developer Roundup, Tools, Tutorials, Forums and more...
|
There have been a few bits and pieces of developer news recently, not enough for a story on their own, but combined into one...
Development Competitions for Finland and Asia, Symbian Conference Offer, Examples and more...
Nokia have announced developer competitions for Finland and Asia. It appears developers from these areas only can enter each competition (I cant be sure on that since I can't read Finnish or Chinese). Finish: http://www.nokia.fi/matkapuhelimet/9210_langaton.html Asian: http://www.asia.forum.nokia.com/sch/contest/index.html
There are also several example applications available from Forum Nokia: Infra red activation and sending in Crystal: http://forum.nokia.com/symbianforum/main/1,6668,1_49_11,00.html
and Application example on sending and receiving SMS messages available: http://forum.nokia.com/symbianforum/main/1,6668,1_49_11,00.html
Way back at the beginning of August Symbian DevNet announced several pieces of news: New Knowledgebases:http://www.symbiandevnet.com/techlib/kbs/kbs.html Texas Instrument's OMAPTM Extensions for Symbian OS now include speech support: http://www.symbiandevnet.com/news/tispeech.html
There are also several other items (OPL, Quartz SDK Update)
There is also a guide for web plug-ins: http://www.symbiandevnet.com/techlib/tutorials/tutorials.html#crystalweb
Symbian also have an offer whereby you can get a Sim free 9210 in a bundle with attending the developers conference. We're pleased to be able to offer a further registration option for the Symbian Developer Expo 2001. For the special price of UK1299 pounds (+VAT), not only do you get all the full delegate benefits of the Symbian Developer Expo, but you will also receive, within 14 days of payment, network service provider contract free, your very own Nokia 9210 Communicator. A pricy way to get your 9210? Good deal for developers though - anyone want to sponsor me to go on this deal!?
Finally if you are interested in developing in Java for the 9210 I recommend you take a look at this site which gives you a quick getting started guide: /allabouter6-late/sslinks/links.php?go=58

Case for the 9210 - Reader's Tip
|
Are you looking for a case for the 9210? Nokia does make them, but they don't exactly shout about them.
According to our reader 9210 specific cases can be purchased from their accessories department on 0800 068 8110. There are two choice a horizontal and vertical belt clip (the vertical one is more of a sleve. They have velvet(?) inside - and proper leather outside with brushed aluminum style logo. Both cases cost 30. I guess people from other countries can contact their local Nokia service centres or from the sites below.
Nokia have some information on one belt clip here (but I don't think this is either of the cases mentioned!: http://www.nokia.com/phones/accessories/popups/bch17.html)
You can also buy acessories from mphone: http://www.mphone.co.uk/link/9210_simfree.html This site includes the cases (for 30) and the desktop charger. Some accessories are also available from Expansys http://www.expansys.com/accessory.asp?code=NOKIA-9210
However I'm sure people are using other things as cases and I'd be interested to hear your experiences and thoughts. Does that old 9110 case fit, or that camera case you bought in the airport - let me know!

eBook Reader gets Chinese Support
|
eBook Reader from Epocware now supports Chinese language eBooks (both Traditional and Simplified).
In order to view Chinese books it is necessary to donwload a special version of eBookReader (Chinese 1.5) and some fonts.
Full instructions are available on the Epocware website below is an extract from the site:
Do you want to read Chinese electronic books on your Nokia 9210 Communicator?
Non-Chinese versions of Nokia 9210 Communicator do not have Chinese fonts built-in. To be able read Chinese texts you need to install Chinese fonts. You can use any Windows True Type font with Chinese symbols for this. Just copy the font file (with .ttf extension) to \System\Fonts folder on your Communicator or Memory Card. Then you need to restart the Communicator to make System to see a new font.

Task Manager 1.11F Released for 9210
|
PsiLoc have released an update to the best selling Task Manager. The updates include more system function controls (which appears to be more reliable than the devices control).
Updates: There is a hotkey to turn the screen offwhen you don't use your 9210 Feature to lock the system Setting screen settings Change the function of Help key.
What is Task Manager Task Manager is a tool, which adds two important functions missing from N9210's system: closing active tasks and software reboot.
Task management functions can be used to close tasks which are active in the background - it is especially useful with tasks, which once run can't be closed in any other way: Messaging, Internet, Calendar, Contacts etc.
Closing such tasks frees operating memory and allows starting other applications. Tasks which cannot be closed this way can be "killed" using Shift + End task button.
Software reboot function can be used instead of removing the battery - all you have to do is to open TaskManager's window and select "Reset Machine" function in Options dialog. Software reboot is much more convenient and, additionally, it saves the battery and Communicator's casing.
Task Manager integrates with system and is fully transparent during normal work. TaskManager's window is invoked with Desk button (pressing Desk one more time hides Task Manager opens Desk screen). Accessing Task Manager this way is very quick and convenient.
Task Manager features two more interesting functions:
- one can switch between active applications using Ctrl+Space (or "backwards" with Ctrl+Shift+Space) - there is an information about free operating (SDRAM) memory displayed in Options window. This is a very useful information, especially that it is not shown by Memory application.

The First News of the New Server
|
The first step is to open coranto.cgi and viewnews.cgi using a text editor (such as Windows Notepad) and change the first line of both files. The first line should be #! followed by the path to Perl 5 on your server.
If you don't know the path to Perl 5 on your server, check your web host's support pages or contact your web host.
For most users, this is all the text file editing that you have to do.
IMPORTANT:Some servers also have Perl 4 installed, an older version, alongside Perl 5. If you have problems, make sure your paths are pointing to Perl 5.001 or higher, as Coranto will not work at all with Perl 4.
