Nokia 9210, Nokia 9290 |
Imhoetek have a Java VNC Viewer for EPOC machines including the
Nokia 9210. The VNC clinet server protocol is well known and allows
you over an internet connection to use your 9210 to take control
of a computer running VNC Server.
Thus the 9210 can be used to remotely control another computer.
From Imhotek website:
VNC stands for Virtual Network Computing. It is, in essence, a remote
display system which allows you to view a computing 'desktop' environment
not only on the machine where it is running, but from anywhere on
the Internet and from a wide variety of machine architectures.
VNC was produced by Olivetti labs, which has since been brought
by AT&T. You can find out more about the product, and ports
available by looking at the AT&T research website: http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc.
Why port to EPOC?
At Imhotek, we use VNC to connect to many of our servers. Some staff
happen to have Psion machines, in particular the Series 7 and Netbook,
which have large enough screens to make controlling an NT or Unix
server a sensible thing to be able to do.
VNC has a Java version, freely available from AT&T. When used
on EPOC this is a little clumsy. So, we have added a couple of extra
buttons and functions to enable easier operation from the psion.
If you are interested in obtaining our source code, contact us.
Otherwise, the .SIS file is available for download from our downloads
section.
Added Functionality
- Program output redirected to \logs\java\java.txt
- Port and Password options have been placed as dialog boxes on
the first screen, rather than entered as parameters
- Help button added to 'remind' us how to navigate the psion window
around the larger server screen
- The whole program runs as a Java application, from the Psion
applications panel
